We drove up to Grand Marais this weekend and tried 2 new (to us) hikes:
The Eagle Mountain Hike ventures into the Boundary Waters Canoe Area. It's a pretty strenuous uphill hike with rocks, mud, and water to navigate. Good hiking shoes are a must. The overlook from the top is beautiful, and a just reward for a challenging hike. Allow about 4 hours for this hike and bring plenty of water and nourishing snacks. See the Photos page on this blog...
The Devil's Track River Gorge and Pincushion Mountain Hike is part of the Superior Hiking Trail. We did the Gorge portion only, having worn ourselves out on Eagle Mountain the day before, and wanting to save some energy to stop at Split Rock Light House and Gooseberry Falls on our way home. The payoff here includes beautiful views of the river gorge, tall pines, and aging birches. It's a moderately challenging hike through woods with some steep steps. See Photos page..
